Most travellers today are in search of meaningful and insightful experiences with the different cultures of the world, and now visitors to Stellenbosch have exactly that opportunity by engaging with locals during a walking tour through the Kayamandi Township.
The tour was launched by Stellenbosch 360 on Saturday, October 24th as part of their Route 360 cultural tourism initiative. Route 360 is a ‘culture route’ that paves the way into the hearts and homes of six Stellenbosch communities through authentic cultural experiences that offer visitors a closer look into the their lifestyles, traditions and tastes.
Kayamandi is one of the first of these diverse communities to showcase their abundance of inherent talent and natural resources with their very own cultural Township Tours. Kayamandi means ‘Sweet Home’ in isi-Xhosa and this is exactly what the visitor will experience when they set foot on a walkabout through the settlement; living it up in the warm company of the locals whilst exploring some of the small tourism enterprises erected in the community. Kayamandi is regarded as the second oldest township in South Africa, having claimed its first inhabitants as early as 1940.
The Route 360 Kayamandi Township Tours offer tailor-made packages that range from performing and visual arts to hands-on cooking and baking experiences, and more. For example, visitors can enrol for a private Xhosa cooking lesson with Mama Swartbooi in her home to learn how a ‘Smiley’ (sheep head) should be prepared, put their green fingers to use at the communal Foodpods vegetable hub rooted by Heart Capital, watch Portia weaving magic with multi-coloured glass beads, see Tebogo warming his voice for the weekly performance at Amazink, watch Jimmy preparing clay for his potter’s wheel and Songo motivating adventurous teenagers to hone their mountain-biking skills.
Tours can be booked in advance as half or full day tours from as little as R400 per person. Tours run from Mondays to Saturdays, 10h00 until 13h00 and depart from 36 Market Street, Stellenbosch.
